Howe Baker International

Plant Revamps and Upgrades

Howe Baker provides engineering and EPC delivery for plant revamps, capacity expansions and performance upgrade programmes — applicable to Howe Baker-designed equipment and third-party process plant.

Overview

About This Service

Revamps and plant upgrades are required when existing facilities need to operate at higher throughput, meet revised product specifications, comply with updated environmental requirements, or address reliability and efficiency issues that have developed over the plant's operating life.

Howe Baker provides engineering services for revamp projects from initial feasibility and debottlenecking studies through to detailed design and EPC delivery. Our engineering teams have direct knowledge of Howe Baker-designed equipment — PSA units, desalters, coalescers and gas processing systems — and can apply this alongside broader process plant engineering capability for projects involving third-party equipment and facilities.

Common Requirements

Typical Situations This Service Addresses

Throughput Increase

Production or processing rate has increased beyond the original plant design capacity, requiring equipment modifications, additions or replacements to accommodate higher throughput.

Product Specification Change

Revised product quality requirements — hydrogen purity, salt content, water content or gas composition — that cannot be met by the existing plant configuration.

Environmental Compliance

Updated emission limits, effluent standards or environmental permits requiring modifications to existing processing or treating systems.

Aged Equipment Replacement

Process equipment or control systems that have reached end of design life or are no longer reliably maintainable, requiring replacement rather than repair.

Energy or Efficiency Improvement

Operating costs or energy consumption have increased to the point where engineering improvements to heat integration, utilities or process configuration are justified.

Feedstock Change

Change in feed gas composition, crude oil type or process feedstock that requires reassessment of existing equipment ratings and potential modification or replacement.

How Howe Baker Supports This

Engineering & Service Scope

Feasibility & Debottlenecking Studies

Engineering assessment of existing plant configuration and equipment ratings to identify constraints, evaluate revamp options and develop indicative scope and cost for improvement programmes.

Conceptual and FEED Engineering

Development of revamp concepts through front-end engineering and design, establishing the basis for detailed design and procurement.

Detailed Design

Full detailed engineering for revamp projects including process, mechanical, piping, instrumentation, electrical and civil disciplines.

Equipment Replacement & Upgrade

Specification, procurement and installation of replacement process equipment, including modernisation of control systems and field instrumentation.

EPC Revamp Delivery

Single-point EPC responsibility for brownfield revamp projects, covering detailed design, procurement, construction management and commissioning on operating plant sites.

Control System Modernisation

Upgrade of legacy DCS, PLC and HMI systems to current technology platforms, including I/O mapping, programming, testing and site commissioning.

Commissioning & Performance Testing

Support through pre-commissioning, plant restart and post-revamp performance testing to confirm that throughput and specification targets have been achieved.
