Howe Baker International

EPC Engineering & Process Technology Capabilities

From process definition to commissioned plant — Howe Baker engineers, procures and constructs modular gas-treatment, hydrogen and separation technology for the global energy and refining industries.

What we engineer

Howe Baker International is a global EPC engineering company that has delivered process plant for the hydrocarbon, refining, petrochemical and hydrogen industries since 1960. Our engineers take a project from process definition and front-end engineering through detailed design, procurement, fabrication, construction support and commissioning — backed by proprietary technology in adsorption, electrostatic separation and hydrogen purification.

Our modular gas-treatment packages are built through a qualified fabrication network close to the project, inspected to our standards, shipped complete and commissioned fast. This delivery model minimises site work, controls quality at the factory and reduces schedule risk — the same disciplined approach we apply whether the project is a refinery hydrogen recovery PSA, an offshore electrostatic coalescer, a crude oil desalter revamp or a green hydrogen purification unit.

We work across the full energy spectrum. On the conventional side that means crude oil desalting, distillate treating, sulphur recovery, fuel gas conditioning and indirect fired heaters. On the energy transition side it means green hydrogen purification, blue hydrogen with CO₂ capture, hydrogen recovery and carbon capture, utilisation and storage. In every case the objective is the same: certainty engineered into the package before it reaches site, and performance proven in service.

Capability areas

Six engineering capability areas cover the breadth of Howe Baker's technology portfolio — from conventional hydrocarbon processing to energy transition.

Process Technology Engineering

Front-end and detailed design of pressure swing adsorption, temperature swing adsorption, electrostatic coalescence, crude oil desalting, sulphur recovery and fuel gas conditioning packages — each engineered to the client’s feedstock, duty and product specification.

Modular Gas Treatment Packages

Skid-mounted and modular process units built through a qualified fabrication network close to the project, inspected to Howe Baker standards, shipped complete and commissioned with minimal site work. This approach shortens installation time and reduces site risk.

Hydrogen Production & Purification

Steam methane reformer BOP, PSA hydrogen purification to 99.9999% purity, green hydrogen De-Oxo and polishing for electrolyser output, and refinery hydrogen recovery. Technologies are qualified to grid-quality standards including ISO 14687.

Electrostatic Separation

AC and DC electrostatic coalescers and crude oil desalters for upstream, pipeline and refinery service — including the AC3 configuration for challenging heavy crude emulsions and FPSO offshore applications.

Energy Transition Solutions

Blue hydrogen with CO₂ capture and conditioning, green hydrogen purification, and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) integration — engineered from concept through EPC delivery.

Aftermarket & Plant Revamps

OEM desalter and coalescer spare parts, adsorbent replacement programmes, plant revamps and capacity expansion, plus desalter commissioning and SMR inspection services for operating assets.
