Adsorbent Replacement

Howe Baker supplies molecular sieve, activated alumina and speciality adsorbent materials for PSA and TSA systems, with replacement programming and post-change cycle verification support.

Overview

About This Service

Adsorbents in PSA and TSA systems undergo gradual deactivation over their operating life through physical attrition, contamination and loss of micropore surface area. When adsorbent activity falls below the level required to maintain product purity or drying performance, replacement becomes necessary.

Howe Baker supplies adsorbent materials for its own PSA and TSA units and can provide replacement programming support including bed design, loading guidance and post-replacement cycle optimisation. Adsorbent selection is based on the specific application — feed gas composition, impurity profile, purity target and operating conditions.

Common Requirements

Typical Situations This Service Addresses

Declining Product Purity

PSA units exhibiting declining hydrogen purity or increasing impurity slip, indicating adsorbent capacity loss and the need for adsorbent replacement.

Reduced Drying Performance

TSA units no longer achieving required outlet dewpoint, indicating moisture capacity reduction in the molecular sieve bed.

End of Adsorbent Design Life

Planned replacement at the end of the adsorbent service life as defined during unit design, typically undertaken during a scheduled plant shutdown.

Adsorbent Contamination

Contamination of adsorbent beds by liquid carryover, oil ingress or chemical contaminants that have permanently reduced adsorbent performance.

Capacity Expansion

Replacement with a higher-capacity or more selective adsorbent grade as part of a broader PSA or TSA revamp to increase throughput or improve performance.

Feed Gas Composition Change

Change in feed gas composition or impurity profile requiring re-evaluation of the adsorbent bed design and potential replacement with more appropriate adsorbent grades.

How Howe Baker Supports This

Engineering & Service Scope

Adsorbent Condition Assessment

Review of available operating data and performance trends to assess adsorbent condition and confirm whether replacement is required or whether cycle adjustments can restore performance.

Adsorbent Material Supply

Supply of molecular sieve (3A, 4A, 5A, 13X), activated alumina and speciality adsorbent materials appropriate to the specific PSA or TSA duty and operating conditions.

Bed Design for Replacement

Engineering of the replacement adsorbent bed configuration, including layer quantities, adsorbent grades and loading sequence for each adsorber vessel.

Loading & Activation Guidance

Technical guidance on adsorbent loading procedures, pre-activation requirements and initial regeneration parameters to establish effective adsorbent performance after replacement.

Post-Replacement Cycle Verification

Review of PSA or TSA cycle performance after adsorbent replacement to confirm that design purity and capacity targets are being achieved and to make any necessary cycle adjustments.

Speciality Adsorbent Selection

For applications requiring activated carbon, silica gel or specific contaminant-removal adsorbents, Howe Baker can advise on appropriate material selection for the duty.
